Harnessing Solar PV-Biomass Potentials in Ekiti State, Nigeria for Sustainable Rural Energy Access: A Case Study of Alare/Araromi Village

JETI Admin

Abstract

Sustainable energy is a necessary ingredient for any substantial development in any nation. It is an indispensable tool for rapid socio-economic and industrial growth. Lack of access to clean and sustainable energy system is one of the major challenges in the rural areas. Electrification of some rural areas through grid extension is not economical, due to their remoteness, dispersed population (with relatively low income) and difficult geographical terrains. Renewable energy adoption will enable the rural dwellers to meet their basic energy needs and thereby enhancing better standard of living for the people. This work reviewed the current electric power generation status of the country, Nigeria and encourages integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the national energy generation mix through the use of Hybrid Power System (HPS). To drive home the point, a typical rural village-Alare /Araromi in Ekiti State, Nigeria, was used as a case study. The study carried out techno-economic feasibility of Solar PV/Biomass/Diesel hybrid system for the village using Hybrid Optimization Model for electric Renewable (HOMER) software. The solar irradiation, biomass resources and DG parameter data were gathered from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s database, Ekiti State Ministry of Agriculture and manufacturers ’price respectively. The load demand assessment of the village was carried out and analyzed through the use of questionnaires. The optimization results showed that PV-BG-BB is the optimal configuration. The Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) is $0.178/kWh, while renewable energy fraction (RF) is 100%. The result showed that Solar PV/Biomass/Diesel HPS is technically and economically feasible for the study area. The work will be useful to electric power sector stakeholders and interested potential investors in making informed planning decisions toward electrification of distant villages.
