Abstract

With the growing power demand due to population growth and industrialization, it is important to increase the available generation capacity to meet the rising power demand. However, due to inadequate funding and environmental concerns government cannot provide the required generation capacity. Thus, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) remains the most viable option for enhancement of power capacity of transmission system. This paper investigates the role of Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) in improving the voltage stability of the Nigerian 330kV power grid simulated in MATLAB software environment. The results showed that without SSSC, some of the bus voltages magnitudes was outside the permissible voltage limit of 0.95pu≤ Vi≤1.05pu.   However, with SSSC incorporated in the network the new voltage magnitudes of these affected buses improved to acceptable values and consequently a significant reduction in the network losses.
