Vehicle Skid Resistance Analysis for Improved Road Safety - A Case Study of Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria.

JETI Admin

Abstract

Skid resistance is one of the major road pavement characteristics which significantly affect evolution of friction between road surface and vehicle tire in traffic. There are minimum (critical) values set in order to ensure sufficient grip between the road and tire contacting surfaces. Many countries have protocols for ensuring that skid resistance threshold values are maintained on their road networks, this is now being done in Nigeria. Skid resistance studies were conducted on five major roads within the Ado-Ekiti metropolis. The Portable British Skid Resistance Tester was used to obtain the skid resistance values on the selected roads. The Sand Patch Method was used to measure the texture depth while manual count was used for the traffic count. Skid resistance values were obtained for both wet and dry conditions to simulate the rain and dry weathers in Nigeria. The results showed that skid resistance values of roads in Ado Ekiti are within the globally acceptable range. The roads’ macrotexture can be classified as smooth, medium and rough. The study also showed that temperature has negative effect on skid resistance values as it decreases with increasing temperature. Traffic load is also a long-term factor affecting skid resistance. The skid resistance values obtained after three months showed that there is degradation of the road surface texture over time.
