Abstract
With the increasing concerns over home security, there is a growing need for affordable, efficient, and easily manageable security systems. Previous methods have explored the use of microcontrollers to build customisable security systems, while these systems were effective in monitoring and responding to potential security threats, they often lacked remote access, and control capabilities and were expensive. This study aims to develop a microcontroller-based home security system with Bluetooth technology for enhanced accessibility and control. The system is designed to improve home security by providing real-time monitoring and control over entry points. The system integrates an Atmega328P microcontroller for central processing and control, a Bluetooth module for wireless communication of commands, and an Android smartphone application as the user interface for input. The design incorporates a relay-controlled motor mechanism for door locking, providing a robust and efficient security solution. The project’s methodology involved initial simulation using Proteus simulation software, followed by hardware construction on a Vero-board, housed within a distribution box. The system allows users to remotely operate and monitor their home security set-up, leveraging the ubiquity of smartphones for convenient access control. Performance testing of thirteen (13) attempts using different distance ranges (1m-13m) established that the perfect line of sight at which the designed system will be able to react to the command issued by the user is 10m and the average time for the initial connection is 5.02 seconds which demonstrated excellent alignment between the system’s functionality and intended design. Integrating familiar technology with advanced security features presents a user-friendly, yet cost-effective means of safeguarding residential properties.
