The Design, Construction and Working Principle of a Solar Digital Socket Outlet Timer

JETI Admin2

Abstract

This project centers on developing a digital socket outlet timer that incorporates solar technology to enhance safety and energy efficiency. By regulating the timing of electrical appliances' ON/OFF cycles using a relay switch, the system aims to prevent overuse and potential hazards associated with prolonged appliance operation. The integration of solar technology offers several advantages. Firstly, it reduces reliance on traditional power sources, thereby minimizing electricity costs and environmental impact. Additionally, by harnessing solar energy, the system becomes more resilient to power outages and fluctuations in the electrical grid. The hardware components of the system include an Arduino microcontroller, Real-time Clock, solar charge controller, Power relay control, and wireless modules. The microcontroller serves as the central processing unit, coordinating communication, executing scheduling algorithms, and managing power control based on user-defined settings. The Real-time Clock ensures accurate timekeeping, crucial for scheduling ON/OFF cycles. The solar charge controller optimizes the transfer of solar power to batteries, ensuring efficient energy utilization. The Power relay control regulates the flow of electricity to the socket outlet, enabling seamless control over connected appliances. Furthermore, wireless modules enable remote access and control, enhancing convenience and flexibility for users. The user interface features LCD or LED displays for displaying time and status indicators, along with buttons for setting schedules or adjusting settings according to individual preferences. In testing, the system successfully reduced appliance operating time by up to 30%, leading to significant energy savings and enhanced safety by preventing overheating. The measure of saved energy varies across differing applications. This innovative project offers a comprehensive solution for managing electrical appliance usage, promoting safety, energy conservation, and user convenience through the integration of digital and solar technologies.
