Current Status and Prospects of Renewable Energy in Nigeria: Policies and Challenges

JETI Admin2

Abstract

The country, Nigeria is currently facing serious challenges in its energy sector, that is characterized with frequent power outages and over dependence on fossil fuels (with its attendants depleting sources and negative impacts on the environments) as major energy source. The low level of energy production has created a very wide gap between supply and demand. The country is however blessed with so many renewable energy sources (RES) like Solar energy, biomass, Small hydro power,e.t.c that may be harnessed for energy production. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the available renewable energy sources in the country, with a view of identifying its potentials and impacts on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction capabilities. The existing government policies and its impacts on renewable energy growth were discussed. The work also considered the various barriers militating against rapid deployment of RES technology and integration into the national energy mix. Some of the challenges identified are high initial costs, lack of awareness, deficient institutional framework, shortage of indigenous technical expertise. Recommendations were also provided on ways of harnessing the available RES in order to achieve sustainable energy development and improved energy security. The work will assist potential investors and policy makers in making informed decisions in finding an optimal energy sources in overcoming the present energy crisis.
