Design, Construction and Implementation of a Solar-Powered, Four-Way Traffic Control System

Abstract

Efficient traffic control at busy intersections is crucial for coordinated movement and vehicle safety. This project involved the design, construction, and implementation of a four-way traffic control system to facilitate smooth traffic flow and ensure vehicular safety. The system uses an Arduino Uno controller programmed in C and is powered by a solar setup, including a 180W solar panel, a 100Ah battery, and a 20A charge controller. The indicator lights consist of 4W, 12V DC LEDs in standard traffic colors (red, yellow, and green), mounted on galvanized steel poles standing 124 inches tall. The control system features a red-light phase (stop time) of 20 seconds and a yellow light phase (switching time) of 5 seconds, resulting in a total wait time of 25 seconds. Results show that the system ensures continuous operation through solar energy, promoting environmental sustainability, while the Arduino-based control provides precise and adaptable traffic management. This design is adaptable for deployment at any four-way junction, with timing adjustments possible to accommodate specific traffic requirements.
