DEVELOPMENT AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF BRIQUETTES FROM CORNCOBS, BAGASSE AND POLYETHENE FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

JETI Admin2

Abstract

This paper developed briquettes from a mixture of corncob, bagasse and polyethene waste. The aim of the study was to evaluate the briquettes' performance in an experimental laboratory boiler as a potential source of fuel for industrial application. Corncob, bagasse and polyethene waste were combined in the following weight ratios: B1 (80:10:10), B2 (70:20:10), B3 (60:30:10), and B4 (50:40:10). Cassava starch (25 percent by weight) was added as a binder to each mixture. Using a 10-ton hydraulic piston press and a 200 kN compaction pressure, the mixtures were manually densified. Proximate, calorific value, and combustion analyses are performed on these. The performance evaluation of the briquettes was carried out using laboratory boiler and compared the result with firewood fuel. The direct method boiler efficiency was also computed to improve its use for industrial applications. The results shown the highest value calorific value was 24.40 MJ/kg. the maximum efficiency for briquette was 78.4 % while firewood fuel had 72.3 %. Subsequently, producing briquettes from corncob, bagasse, polyethene waste provides renewable, clean, and sustainable energy as an alternative to firewood while also minimizing the effects on forests. Additionally, it recommended as an alternative fuel for industrial applications and could also enhance market diversification, rural economic empowerment, and job opportunities
